It’s been a while since I’ve put a comparison post up here. This song is one that I really liked back in high school but had shelved it for a while until looking for some songs for a future post.
Fanfarlo stays very true to the original while still imbuing their own sound. They also create a deeper and richer sound which may be due to a greater number of instruments and definitely due to the layering of voices. I do prefer the vocals in Fanfarlo’s version to those in Neutral Milk Hotel’s original because I have always found the vocals in the original to be very flat and grating. The one aspect of the original that I absolutely adore is the musical saw – I think it really adds an ephemeral quality to the song.
